How to Sign a PDF Online for Free

· 4 min read

A contract, an offer letter or a school form arrives as a PDF and needs your signature today. You do not need to print it, sign it with a pen and scan it back. You can put your signature on the PDF on screen, in the right place, and send the signed copy back in a few minutes.

What you need before you start

Only the PDF and a device. A computer works well with a mouse or trackpad, and a phone or tablet lets you sign with your finger. Read the document first: signing it on screen means the same as signing the paper copy, so make sure you agree with what it says.

How to sign a PDF, step by step

Open Sign PDF and add your file. The document opens with a page sidebar, so you can jump straight to the page with the signature line.

Choose Signature and create it in one of three ways: draw it with your mouse or finger, type your name and pick a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper. Place it on the line and drag the corners until it is the right size.

When everything is in place, download the signed PDF and send it back by email or WhatsApp.

Initials, dates and ticks

Many agreements ask for more than one signature. Create your initials separately and add them to each page that asks for them. Use the date tool next to your name, a text box for anything else the form asks for, such as a job title or a flat number, and tick marks for the yes/no boxes.

Tips for a signature that looks right

Draw your signature a little larger than you need and then scale it down; it looks smoother. If you upload a photo, use dark ink on plain white paper and good light, so only the ink lands on the page.

Check every page before you download. A missing initial on page 3 is the most common reason a signed contract is sent back.

Signing and security

A signed contract often contains personal details. If you send it by email, consider adding a password with Protect PDF and sharing the password separately. To stop anyone moving your signature in a PDF editor, run the signed file through Flatten PDF before you send it.

The short version: Open the PDF in Sign PDF, draw, type or upload your signature, add initials and the date where needed, check every page, then download and send it back.
