Unlock PDF removes the password or the restrictions from a PDF you are allowed to open, so it opens, prints and copies without prompts. It can also change the password to a new one if you would rather keep the file protected.

How to use Unlock PDF

Drop the PDF on the page, or choose it from your device, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive (up to 260 MB). The tool checks what kind of protection the file has and tells you. If it has an open password, type it in; it can't be removed without it. If the file opens freely but blocks printing, copying or editing, those restrictions can be removed with no password at all. Leave Remove protection selected, press Unlock PDF, and download the result.

Changing a password with Unlock PDF

Choose Change password instead to swap the current password for a new one. You type the new password twice, a meter shows how guessable it is, and you decide what people can do once the file is open: print, copy text and images, edit pages, or comment and fill forms.

When removing a password makes sense

Banks and utilities often send monthly statements locked with your date of birth or part of your account number. Many people remove that password before filing the statements away. It also helps before merging, since Merge PDF and most converters can't read a locked file. Unlock PDF is not a password cracker: you need the password, or the file must already open for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can Unlock PDF open a file I don't have the password for?
No. If a PDF needs a password to open, you have to enter it. The tool only removes protection from files you can already open.
What's the difference between an open password and restrictions?
An open password stops the file opening at all. Restrictions let it open but block printing, copying or editing. Restrictions come off without asking for anything, while an open password has to be typed in first.
Why can't I print or copy text from my PDF?
Whoever made it set permissions that block those actions. Upload the file here and choose Remove protection; if there is no open password, you don't need to enter anything.
Can I use Unlock PDF to set a new password?
Yes. Choose Change password, enter the current one if the file asks for it, type the new one twice and pick which permissions to allow.
Why do I need to remove a password before merging?
Other tools can't read a locked PDF until the password is gone. Remove it here, then use Continue with this file to send the open copy straight to Merge PDF or Compress PDF.
What if my PDF isn't protected at all?
The page tells you it already opens and prints freely. You can still add one through Change password.
