How to Convert HEIC Photos to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android
iPhones save photos as HEIC, a format that takes about half the space of JPG. That is good for your phone's storage, but many websites, upload forms, older programs and Windows computers still cannot open HEIC. Converting to JPG fixes all of these. This guide shows how on each kind of device, and how to make your iPhone save JPG from now on.
Convert in the browser (any device)
Open HEIC to JPG, add one photo or a whole batch, and press JPG. Each photo is converted with the same name and a .jpg ending, and you can download them one by one or all together. This works the same on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install. The same list offers PNG, WebP and other formats if a site asks for something else.
On Windows
Windows often shows HEIC photos only as an icon, or asks you to add an extension from the Microsoft Store before the Photos app can open them. Converting to JPG avoids that, and JPG works in Word, email and every upload form.
On a Mac
Preview opens HEIC, and File, then Export, lets you save a photo as JPEG one at a time. For a batch, or when you need to send photos to people on Windows or Android, converting them all in one go is quicker.
On iPhone: send JPG, or stop saving HEIC
To make new photos JPG from now on, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so convert those when a site rejects them.
JPG files are usually larger than the HEIC originals. If an upload has a size limit, run the converted photos through Compress Image, where you can aim for a size such as 500 kB.
Need a PDF instead?
Some portals want documents as PDF, not photos. HEIC to PDF puts your photos into one PDF, one photo per page, in the order you add them.
