How to Enhance Photo Quality Online: Fix Dark, Blurry or Small Photos
The photo of your child's school play is dark and grainy. The only copy of an old certificate is a small, soft scan. The product picture you need for a listing is 600 pixels wide and the marketplace wants 1,200. None of these needs a photo-editing course: a good automatic enhancer fixes light, colour and sharpness in one pass, and can make a small image larger without turning it into blocks.
What 'enhancing' actually changes
Enhancing adjusts what the camera got wrong. Exposure brings a dark picture up to normal brightness without washing out the sky. Colour correction removes the orange cast of indoor lighting or the blue of a cloudy day. Sharpening makes edges crisper so text and faces read better. Noise reduction smooths the coloured speckles that phones add in low light.
Upscaling is different: it makes the picture larger, filling in new pixels so the result stays smooth instead of blocky. It cannot recover detail that was never captured, such as a face that is a smudge in the original, but it makes a small, clean image usable at a bigger size.
Enhance a photo, step by step
Open Image Enhancer and add one or more pictures from your device, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and other common formats work, up to 260 MB each.
Leave the Look on Smart auto, which decides what each picture needs, or choose a different Look if you want a particular style. If the picture is small, choose to upscale it two or four times. If it is going on social media, pick the size for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or LinkedIn. Press the button, compare the enhanced picture with the original on screen, and download it when you are happy.
Getting the best result
Start from the original file, not a copy that has been sent through a chat app; messaging apps shrink and compress photos, and that lost detail cannot be brought back. Crop away what you do not need first with Crop Image, so the enhancer works on the part that matters.
Check faces and text at full size before you download. Strong sharpening can make skin look harsh, and upscaling a very noisy picture can make the noise more visible; if that happens, try a gentler Look or a smaller upscale.
Scans of documents and old prints
A blurry scan of a letter or a faded print often becomes much easier to read after enhancing, because contrast and sharpness matter most for text. If you need the words as text rather than a better picture, run the enhanced image through Image to Text afterwards; clearer pictures give more accurate text recognition.
After enhancing
Upscaled pictures are larger files. Before you email or upload one, shrink the file size with Compress Image, which keeps the new dimensions. For product photos, Remove Background gives a clean white or transparent background, and Resize Image sets exact pixel sizes for sites that ask for them.
