How to Merge PDF Files Without a Watermark (Free)

You combine a contract and its schedules, send the result to a client, and only then notice a grey line in the footer of every page advertising the software you used. It looks careless, and on a legal or financial document it can make the reader wonder whether the file was altered. The fix is simple: use a merger that adds nothing, and check the output before it leaves your hands.

Why some free tools add a watermark

A watermark is how many 'free' PDF programs pay for themselves. Desktop editors on a trial licence often print their name across the page or in a corner until you buy a key. Some websites let you merge for free but stamp a small logo on the result, cap the number of files, or ask you to create an account before the clean download appears.

The stamp is usually faint text in the footer, a logo in a corner, or a diagonal word such as TRIAL or EVALUATION. Because it is written into the page itself, it survives printing, forwarding and conversion to other formats, so it follows the document wherever it goes.

How to check a merged PDF before you send it

Open the merged file and zoom to the bottom and top margins of the first, middle and last pages, where stamps usually sit. Look at the corners at full page view as well, since a light grey logo is easy to miss on a white page.

Then open the file's properties (in most PDF readers: File, then Properties or Document Properties). The Producer and Creator lines name the software that wrote the file. That is normal and invisible to the reader, but if the page itself carries the same name, the tool has stamped it.

Finally, check the page count. A merge that quietly stops after a set number of pages, or drops one file from a long list, is a second way some free tiers hold back the full result.

Merge PDFs into one clean file, step by step

Open Merge PDF in your browser. Add the PDFs from your computer or phone, or pick them from Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive; each file can be up to 260 MB. JPG and PNG images can go in the same batch, so a photographed signature page can take its place inside the document.

Drag the file cards into the order you want. For finer control, switch to the Pages view and move single pages, rotate a sideways scan, or remove a page you do not need. Press Merge PDF and download the result. HuntPDF adds no watermark, logo or footer to the pages, asks for no account, and sets no daily limit on how often you merge.

Give the download a clear name before you save it, such as Contract-Acme-2026-signed.pdf. A name that says what the file is helps the person who receives it, and it saves you opening three files called merged.pdf later.

Keep the quality of the original pages

Merging should copy pages, not redraw them. Text stays as selectable text and images keep their resolution, so the merged file reads exactly like the originals. If a document looks blurrier after merging with another tool, that tool has re-compressed it; merge again from the original files.

Mixed page sizes are fine. An A4 report and a US Letter scan each keep their own size in the merged file and print without being cropped. If you want every page the same size, merge first and then change the page size in one pass.

What merging cannot do: watermarks already in your files

A merger adds nothing, but it also removes nothing. If one of your source PDFs already carries a stamp, because it was exported from a trial program or downloaded with a logo, that stamp comes through into the merged file.

The clean way round is to go back to the source: re-export the page from the original Word, Excel or design file, or ask the sender for an unmarked copy. Removing a watermark that someone else placed on a document you do not own the rights to is not something to do quietly, so treat a stamped source as a reason to ask for a fresh copy.

Finish the file before you share it

A bundle built from scans can be heavy. If it needs to go by email or through an upload form, run it through Compress PDF straight from the result screen with 'Continue with this file'. For a document with personal or financial details, add a password with Protect PDF and send the password by a different channel, such as a text message.

If you only need part of a long document, pull the relevant pages out first and merge only those. A ten-page bundle is easier to read, quicker to upload, and less likely to expose information the reader never needed.

The short version: Merge in a tool that adds nothing to the pages, check the margins, corners and page count of the result, and fix any stamp at the source file rather than after merging.
