How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages or Sections

4 min read

A 200-page scanned bundle is unwieldy when you only need one signed page, or when different reviewers each need a different chapter. Splitting lets you cut a PDF exactly where you want.

Two ways to split

You can split at chosen points, which cuts the document into sections between the pages you pick, or extract, which keeps only the specific pages you select and drops the rest.

Extract is perfect for pulling one signature page out of a long contract. Splitting is better for breaking a report into per-chapter files.

Step by step

Open Split PDF and upload the document. You will see a thumbnail of every page.

Click the scissors between two pages to add a split point, or switch to extract and select just the pages you want, then download the result.

Ways to split a document

Splitting is not one action but several, depending on what you need. You can pull a single page out as its own file, extract a continuous range such as pages five to twelve, or break one document into several separate files. Choosing the right mode saves time: if you only need one signed page from a long contract, extract that page rather than splitting the whole document.

A frequent real-world case is a phone or office scanner that dumps a whole stack of paper into one PDF. Splitting lets you separate that batch back into individual documents — one per invoice, per form, or per letter — so each can be filed or shared on its own.

Split vs delete vs extract

These three actions overlap but differ in intent. Splitting creates new files from the pages you choose while leaving the original intact. Extracting pages is similar but usually means pulling specific pages into a new file. Deleting pages permanently removes pages from a document you keep. If your goal is to share only part of a file, split or extract; if it is to clean up a document by removing blank or unwanted pages, delete is the cleaner choice.

Because splitting never modifies your source file, you can experiment freely — try different ranges, download what works, and your original is always still there.

A quick workflow

Open Split PDF, upload your document, choose the page or range you want, and download. If you need several pieces, set multiple ranges in one pass rather than repeating the process. The split runs on the server over an encrypted connection, and the files are removed automatically afterward, so nothing sensitive lingers.

The short version: Use extract to keep only the pages you need, or split points to break a document into sections; the page thumbnails make it easy to cut in exactly the right place.
